Wow!! What a great video!!! Everyone should watch that just to see the true spirit of drag racing at it's infancy! That was a true slice of what made America so great back in the day. Did anyone besides me notice just how skinny everyone was back then??

Thanks for the link, Jackee!

Far Out.... Ohio George, Peterson, Parks, even the NHRA Secretary "Barbera Livingston"

By far the coolest thing I've seen in a while!

My family enjoyed it :D

An absolutley superb job of editing some old home movies. This style reminds me of the original Warren Miller ski films.

Guess what! I've learned that Ingenuity in Action is available on a DVD along with other old footage. I haven't seen it yet, so I can't speak for it, but I did order two copies. I'd pay the price they're asking, if only "Ingenuity in Action" were on the DVD.

If you're interested in the DVD which contains Ingenuity in Action, footage of the 59 Nationals from Detroit, here is the link.

(If it doesn't appear as a link to take you into the site, copy it and paste it directly into your browser.)

I was a little sad when I heard it was closed down and developed. Last time I was there was in the 80's.

This thread got me lookin around on the web for stuff on the old Detroit Dragway. Check this out. MP3's of WKNR radio commercial's for Detroit Dragway featuring Garlits and Pete Robinson's "Jack Car", and a Motor City Dragway commercial featuring the Batmobile, Little Red Wagon and Sox & Martin.

The previous link is showing a different DVD now. Maybe they've sold out.

Try this site if you want to own this piece of drag racing history.

Scroll down to Hot Rodding from the 50s. Ingenuity in Action is on that DVD. This is a must have for any racing enthusiast video collection.

The footage of the 1958 Nationals in OKC is really cool. Too bad that track or even parts of it aren’t still there. Last time I was in OKC there was just dirt field next to a parking lot for the fairgrounds where it looks like the track was.

I think I remember that place in OKC as a kid. I know I didn't know what it was all about, but it seems it was a staple at the fair. Does anybody know when it stopped running?

The track at OKC was run and promoted by Bud Carson, who also ran the dirt track which is still at the fairgrounds. 1958 I believe was the last year they ran the US nationals there. The track ran weekly until around 1962 or 63 when the fair built an arena at the end of it and they had to move to running 1/8th mile which only lasted for a year or two. I was talking with Shane Carson (Bud’s son) and he was telling me they had to switch the direction they ran on the track because of a car not getting shut down and crossing the street running into the shopping center.

OK, then maybe not. That's just a tad before my time. Thanks for the info! :)
