NHRA admitting they made a mistake... .. isn't that a oxy-moron.......lol...

Lots of rumors about racers and sponsors complaining behind closed doors....it should be interesting.....

I thought it was the countdown to 8.

Four would probably be better and make more sense since they were probably all pretty competitive all year to be top 4. I just dont think that someone could have a hot streak during the cold months, be eighth and still have a championship chance.

So since a countdown to 4 would make more sense, maybe they will change it to ten.

i think if next years championship turns out to be a farce, in other words some driver dominates for the majority of the year and then proceeds to lose the championship over something silly in the last few races, they might re-consider if enuff "important" people (that is, people with cash) make a big fuss.

I don’t like the new chase because it is losing focus of the actual racing. I recall Greg Anderson harvesting some of his engine talent from NASCAR. One of the comments from the NASCAR folks were they finally had some freedom in the engine department. I haven’t paid much attention to NASCAR in several years but I recall them adjusting spoiler height and such to even out the competition. Once again, that is not racing in my book. I hate to see this progression towards rewarding the weak and penalize the strong.

how about keeping the current system for the overall champ and using the new high 8 system for a new title like "shoot out competitor"...oops they already have that:confused:

What I find interesting is watching the team owners and drivers when interviewed on NHRA Today, trying to pretend they like it and it is good for the sport. It is obvious they don't like it and it's a sad thing to see people who can control such powerful race vehicles groveling because they know they can't criticize NHRA.

Back in the ol days, the season champion was decided at the last event, competing against 31 drivers or full field. In the proposed chase, the champion will be decided by 4 drivers at the last two events. If anyone thinks this is unfair, how do you think the racers felt in the early years? Next year, the 4 finalist in each category must step it up to the next level, minimize mistakes, if they want to win, just like the playoffs in NBA or NFL. It will be interesting.

What if there's an oildown or a suspected oildown such as the one that happened to Ron Capps?

Bad day for you. You lose. This sucks big time but they won't change it.

At the risk of pissing everybody off, I've got to say I like the new system, specifically the last two race showdown portion of it. Championship caliber athletes perform when the pressure is on or they don't become champions. In any major sport other than auto racing you have to win the last game of the year to win a championship. Just handing the championship to the winner of the last race doesn't work, but whittling the field down to four teams is somewhat akin to a playoff system. I realize this takes away the opportunity for teams that don't make the cut to move up into the Top Four, but does that matter all that much? Ask the Colts if they would have been happier losing to Denver in the AFC title game instead of to the Steelers in Round two.

I'm sure I wouldn't be happy if I won 15 of the first 21 races and then suffered first round parts failures in the last two races, but there are other teams that had excellent seasons but didn't get a ring. That creates drama, which creates interest.

Top Fuel:Schu, Kalitta, Melanie and Brandon
Funny Car:Capps, Force, Hight, TJ
Pro Stock:Anderson, Line, DC, KJ

I wouldn't call any of those drivers underserving champions if the new system were in effect this season.

Didn't piss me off because I completely agree with you! I can't wait to see this new format in place and the excitement it brings next year.

Sounds like entertainment to me (like the WWF?). I guess they call it the WWE now. I remember when I was a kid and found out pro wrestling was staged for entertainment. I lost interest. To bad for me!!

You're talking about a "sport" where they know beforehand who is going to win. Outside of the occasional team orders (I don't know if they do that anymore or not,LOL) I don't think that's the case in drag racing. Someone still has to perform on the track, only now it will be under tremendous pressure.

And I do agree with you, sounds like entertainment to me. That's what drag racing is to me, entertainment. Last years Funny Car battle was very entertaining with three cars going into the last race with a legitimate shot to win the title. Just like the Top Fuel title run in 1990 when Lahaie and Amato met in the final round at Pomona, winner goes home with the crown.

I agree...no points taken on oil downs.....how can one account for parts malfunctions? Excuse me for sounding real out of it; but where does all the fine $$$ go to & for what is it used? I know it gets paid to NHRA but is there a specific use for it? It may have been said somewhere before over the years but I have slept since then!! Thanks

In 1987 Amato and Lahaie raced in the Pomona SEMI's for the title.

Alright, I'll add my three cents! I have been converted to the top 8 deal, but I still think it will come back to bite NHRA in the butt. And the "final four" deal is just asinine! I can tell you from what I hear racers and sponsors are not that excited with NASCAR's Chase. But, we'll all know soon.

Heard Marty Reid say they were gonna start tracking the rest of the races to see who would win if the new deal was already in place. That might be very interesting.

BTW, from what I understand, the money that teams pay in fines is divided up between the teams that had no oil downs during the season. Honestly, they should donate it to DRAW or something.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the idea. And, considering how close the points races are this year, I don't see any need for it.
