As reported on NHRA.com:

"DSR inks Matco Tools for three more years: Don Schumacher Racing has inked a three-year associate sponsorship agreement with Matco Tools to support all DSR teams through 2009. Matco Tools had been a primary sponsor of a DSR Funny Car team in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and an associate sponsor on all DSR teams from 2001 through 2006.

"We are pleased to maintain our longtime relationship with Matco Tools through this multi-year associate sponsorship agreement," said Schumacher.

"Matco Tools is honored to continue our relationship with DSR," said John Torok, Motorsports Marketing Manager for Matco Tools. "To have our tools used and recommended by drag racing's premier technicians and crew chiefs speaks volumes. We look forward to winning many more races with DSR in the future."

seems i remember them say they would stick around as an associate when the anoucement to go TF rail was made... no suprise....

more than likely a part of the contract was for DSR to have them as a associate after bowing from an Primary... lots of contracts have options like that....

lots of Cup contracts have options that keep Sponsors from leaving or working with leaving drivers at another team as well for so many years... Jack Roush ran alot of big money out of NASCAR with that paragraph.... amazed it hasn't reared it head in Drag racing.....

I heard the same thing, sticking around as an associate. I'm very happy to see a great company like Matco putting their primary money on a team that is #1 considering they are so young. It is fun seeing the Powers team grow and give the big guys fits by winning a few races. It seems like it was just a month or two ago that the first pictures of the Powers shop were put on the net. Who's shop could it be? Now hopefully someone will step up and sponser Rod Fuller's ride.

An Associate sponsorship can be as little as $50,000 per year to $1,000,000. It's very misleading! Some of those Associate sponsors you see on the JFR cars are easily over $1 million.

Matco is most likely providing only tools and likely has agreed to sell collectables for the DON. I would be very surprised if Matco was putting big bucks in Powers deal as well. They fund the racing programs from the sales of product to their distributors. Die cast was a big part of the program but as most of you know die cast has all but died. Danaher runs a very tight ship. Tom Willis gets plenty of preasure from Danaher to turn a profit. Matco wants new distributors/franchises. NHRA Drag Racing brings name recognition when recruiting new distributors. Willis is a smart cookie and like The Danaher brothers he is a deal maker. DON most likely had it handed to him which in turn pissed him off. Rumor was he was talking to Mac Tools last week. Looks like Mac must be happy with Force.

Well don did say that Matco and himself will have a relationship for years to come...

The Don a few weeks ago gave us a little insider info if ya read correctly he wasnt fibbin about the coninuted relationship.

Don and the matco relationship im sure was a no brainer and great for 2 things and one being associated with a high profile team and as wwell a midway icon, hell don owns 2 rows of pits lol and the 2nd the relationship was already in place.

Im just a bit foaming at the mouth for powers and whit to leak the details of there soon to be relationship.

While i have never been a whit supporter it will be nice to see beard tuning 2 cars. oops ...

AND ONCE JUST ONCE I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HOT ROD RIP IT ON SOMEONE AT THE STRIPE AND TIGHTEN IT UP !!!!!

Yes they always did say they would stick around, and the associate deal of 500k to 1 million sounds right for one car, this is a deal for all the cars he will have, so far 2 dragsters and 3 funny cars.

I trust Matco wanted to run top fuel against snap on and mac tools, that was a smart choice for them, kinda renews the beer wars we wont see anymore.

What I am wondering is if Don just advised them that the price of full sponsorship on a funny car went up so they decided to become associates instead. Seems the full deal they had made them associates on the rest of the teams all along since they still provided all the tools.

Who knows if the price of the full deal went up from 3 to 5 million and for 5 million they get the associate deal and the dragster they wanted?
