Default First 8 second, 150 mph STOCK run ever

It happened this morning at Charlotte. Less than eleven years after the first 9 second Stocker run. Don Fezell drove his stick-shift, supercharged AA/S 2008 CobraJet Mustang to an 8.954 second, 153 mph pass. -1.046 under the AA/S Class Index, and is #1 after the first session. Air is shown at a little more than 500' above sea level according to DRC.

Weather conditions: air temperature 54 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.53 inches, adjusted altitude 525 feet, track temperature 61 degrees

Not to be outdone, Roy Hill drove his SS/AAA (yes, three A's, for the new 5.5 pound class) 2010 blown 'Stang to an 8.268 pass, to lead the pack after one Super Stock session at -1.132 under. This is by far the quickest pass by ''traditional'' (non-SS Modified or SS/AH Hemi car) S/S car, and fastest speed ever, even faster than SS/AH cars, excluding some of the Modified cars within S/S.

One more session in each today, and S/S Class Eliminations is tomorrow. If the air remains this good, we may see even better runs in S/S tomorrow. That is, if racers are willing to risk the penalties

Ken Miele, CC/SA racer with his '67 Shelby and owner of ClassRacer.com is there, and said the air he showed on his weather station on the run was
Temp 51
bar 29.57
humid 585
DA -131 ft
no wind

Mineshaft air + downhill track = silly fast.

For some comparisons...

May 6, 1978, Seattle WA, first 10 second Stock run (Jim Waldo, A/S '67 Fairlane)

May 6, 2001, Mission B.C., first 9 second Stock run (Bobby DeArmond A/SA '69 Camaro)

April 13, 2012, Charlotte NC, first 8 second (F/X) Stock run (Don Fezell AA/S '08 Mustang)

Add two more F/X Stockers to the 8 Second Club.

And, add Fezell for the second time this season.

1 391 A/SA Irvin Johns, Charlestown IN, '10 Challeng 9.881 11.00 -1.119
2 8 AA/SA Bo Butner, Floyds Knobs IN, '12 Mustang 8.909 10.00 -1.091
3 3540 J/S Charles Downing, Britton MI, '10 Cobra Jet11.272 12.35 -1.078
4 1587 AA/S Don Fezell, DuBois PA, '08 Mustang 8.958 10.00 -1.042
5 3909 AA/SA Drew Skillman, Greenwood IN, '12 Mustang 8.967 10.00 -1.033

Downing's car, BTW, became the first 10 second J car (stick or auto) in the 10's at Belle Rose last month in the CIC race with CIC winner Brad Zaskowski driving.

Gainesville saw the first 10 second I car (stick or auto) by the 302 3-valve motored I/SA '12 Mustang of Anthony Bongiovanni, driven there by Mike Ficacci.

And, from Bret Kepner earlier this evening:

UNBELIEVEABLE NUMBERS! During the NHRA Div. III LODRS event at Inidianapolis today, SuperCar Showdown star Bo Butner clocked an incredible 8.909 at 153.65 miles per hour in his Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to become the driver of the quickest and fastest quarter-mile production car in history! The eighth-mile numbers were 5.66 at 122mph!

At the same event, SCS competitor Drew Skillman's Cobra Jet hit 8.97/149 after an 8.91/151 test run while Don Fezell's manually-shifted version ran 8.95/152. Three eight-second, 150 mph stockers at one event! Congratulations to all!

F/X Stockers are doin' it in Indy this weekend.

This past weekend in Georgia, at the NHRA Division 2 LODRS event, Don Fezell made more history. The first Stock Eliminator pilot in the 8's laid down the quickest official time in Stock history in his CobraJet Mustang:

8 1587 AAA/S Don Fezell, DuBois PA, '08 Mustang 8.772 9.70 -0.928

The new (for 2012) AAA/S stick class, the same weight break and Index as SS/AA, a class for Race Hemis and 427 Corvettes. And a time, that, 12 years ago, would have been quicker than any SS/AA Hemi car had ever gone.

Add another member to the 8 second club as well, from the same event:

1 303N AA/SA Mike Skinner, Grove City OH, '13 Mustang 8.824 10.00 -1.176

THis is one of, I believe, the new Coyote supercharged 5.0 liter, 500 hp motors (all the blown CJ's before were 5.4 liter motors rated 425-435 factory).

THat makes at least five Stockers I am aware of with official 8 second timeslips from NHRA sanctioned events.

Not to be outdone, former ulti time World and US Nationals Champ in Stock, Kevin Helms drove the Team Tueton V-10-powered DRagPak Chalenger:

9 428 AA/SA Kevin Helms, Schriever LA, '11 Challenger 9.075 10.00 -0.925

And, from the NMRA event in Bradention, with the CJ Challenge. As posted by Bret Kepner:

In the final round, Holbrook clocked a brutal -1.19 8.510/160.19 but Skillman hit an astonishing -1.403 8.597 at 158.06, (remember, Drew is in AA/SA), to win! Congratulations to both for a weekend of drag racing history!

By the way, Randy Hopkins' SS/AAA 2012 Cobra Jet posted an 8.229 in qualifying and ran an early shut-off -1.164 8.236 at only 149 mph after redlighting in the opening round.

Looks like another exciting year for racers and fans of the new factory supercars.

And maybe some more monster runs tomorrow during Class Eliminations, in both Stock and Super Stock (especially in the Combo Classes), as well as the newer, higher, Stock and S/S Classes.
