After Tony he bounced around a bit, then he was welcomed back to JFR with open arms, then shortly thereafter he was shipped to Tasca, which lasted just about as long as JFR, then to the unemployment lines.
Is he hard to get along with, or just can't tune? Perhaps the TPed year was a mirage??

He was allowed to run the car as he wanted with no interference when he was with Tony. And the results showed. We won quite a few races. In the fourth year, he won the Championship, so obviously he knows what he's doing. In the time that I worked with him, he was extremely thorough with every phase of the cars preparation, and on raceday would have the entire day planned out, as well as a plan for every type of condition we might race under that day.

Contrast that to the other teams he has been on since, that have had their own programs and the way they wanted it done. I have alluded to this a few times before on this board when other crew chiefs have had the same things said about them. YOU CAN"T TUNE A CAR WITH YOUR HANDS TIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's absolutely ignorant to bring someone into your program to make it better, and then tell them how they are going to do everything.

It comes down to a matter of respect, and in many cases, ego's as big as a ranch house. No car owner would hire Austin Coil and then restrict him, or Alan Johnson, Rahn Tobler? Some car owners just hire people based on who they think they can manipulate into taking all the arrows in the ass when it doesn't run like they think it should.

If Dickie is allowed to do things the way he wants, and run the car the way he wants, it will be a contender.

Thats a big if when the cars that run well end up being traded to the napa team. I would think he is going back to where his hands will be tied, three team cars sharing information, parts and pieces. In his own words he is starting off right where they left it. We will see how he handles the first moves, or learns to become that team player that might have kept him bouncing from pit to pit. He jumped at the chance to join tasca, I think deep down he just wants away from JFR. That showed when he left with the #1 with Tony. DSR is about as far away as you can get.

Even though all 3 cars share the same parts, and the CC's usually share ideas and info, they are allowed to run the car how they want with what they are given.

The last time he was with JFR, he was working on the Dragster, which was only allowed to test, and under NHRA's testing rules, with tune-up parameters that would have been useless anywhere and worth nothing when it came to real world data like the super slow blower overdrive. That would have been great for someone just starting in as a CC. Getting to run a car without much pressure, but not for someone used to competing every week. That would have been an easy decision to go over to Tasca's.

But if he would have waited it out, he would be the crew chief on the dragster now and had no other choice to run the car his own way because its the first and only dragster at JFR. Also, the only dragster of its kind with the tree tube chassis that any tuning knowledge from a dragster might not apply.... He would have had it his way. His leaving might have thrown the timetable off of getting Brit some national event experience at the last few races, where he would have been tuning under pressure.

I don't foresee DV being able to do "his" "thing with DSR---not going to happen. BTW---Kurt Elliott was his right hand man for many of his successful years.
