Question Top fueler vs funny car - can they be made into one class?

As of this weekend the fastest Top Fueler and the fastest Funny Car are only .15 of a second difference in ET and FC has recorded a top speed 6 mph than any TF. Could changes be made to FC to make them be able to compete with TF? FC currently weighs about 200 lbs more than a TF, if the weight was changed for both classes either up or down what would the avg. ET be. Perhaps a increase length for FC might improve drivability and provide even better aerodynamics which might lower ETs. In this day of semi-filled fields and combining of classes with a 32 car field, a champ of each class based on a complete year of points, no qualifying for championship chase. Finally
the last race of the year would pit the TF Champ for the season vs FC Champ for the season. Winner would be declared NITRO CHAMP! Your thoughts, could physical changes be made to make the 2 classes ET in the same range? Would it be a more interesting raceday if TF and FC competed as one class?

WELCOME - It is feasible that the dragsters & F/C's could be made to run close to each other, but it is not really apples to apples as far as performance goes. Two hundred lbs. of static weight is really not much difference after the first 50/60 feet because the total down force weight and aero drag is what takes over after that. The T/F cars have been shut down as far as development since the 1980's when Tim Richards got with a guy named Rasmussen from the Indy Car series and moved the wing back & up on Amato's cars. Later Amato got this kid named Prock and the speeds & ET's went up. The main thing since then is the canopy and it has been stifled with an air dam and no chance for development. Seemed to me that if you don't want one don't have one, but it is your "Bad" if someone goes faster or quicker. Streamlining the dragsters or lengthening the F/C's just makes them a shorter or longer version of the same thing. Beside that; a 16 car field would surely result and unless it was 8 & 8 with a ladder that had F/C vs T/F to start off with I think the novelty would wear off quickly. I do think it is a good idea though and have maybe a non points - Big Bucks Shootout with a handicap or at the 4 lane tracks have the diggers on one side and the flippers on the other.

It's been 18 years since Al Hofmann and the Showdown in Bristol...

... is it time for another?

The Bristol event 18 years ago was tilted in favor of the floppers, the main reason being the intensity of the 'hit' that the TF drivers had to contend with. If I recall, there were a lot of complaints - and a lot of red lights on behalf of the dragsters.

It's simple enough - dragsters are quicker than the funnies because due to their rear engine configuration, they're able to apply a lot more clutch at the launch. Lots of difference between .820 and .860 60' times. And a funny is always going to gain more speed in the back half, all else being equal - that big ol' wing on the diggers is quite an air brake.

From where each version stages, the funnys have a 40" overhang and the dragsters have 30" of overhang. Overhang is where the beams get tripped
