Wouldnt they just be taking weight off of some other area?

I always have trouble with weight issues when they have a wing adding 5000 pounds of force down through the chassis at its highest stress point.

Only if the driver weighs 120 lbs. soaking wet. Most of them don't have very much ballast if any at all. Between what they do to the chassis for strength, all the electronics, sensors, fuel, oil, rear end, axles, tires, wheels, clutch... it adds up pretty quick.

Good article. gave me some things to think about. The comment of shoemacher only doing it for aero is not realistic. if he was doing it for aero, it would not be for an aero advantage, as anyone can use one (if their ok'd) if they choose. so what would be the point?

We have no ballast any where on the car and are 40 pounds over weight. There was some interesting things said though that I hadn't thought about
