2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Production Commences
By Drew Phillips - August 6, 2013 – 2:08 pm

Production of the 2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, the last of its kind before the redesigned 2015 Mustang arrives next year, has begun at Watson Engineering in Taylor, Michigan.

With the first prototype already tested at the South Georgia Motorsports Park back in May and initial assembly completed at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant, the 2014 Cobra Jet is ready to receive most of the racing components that turn a regular Mustang into a factory drag car.

As a reminder, the 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet gained a new three-speed race transmission with SFI approved housing and a new parachute mount for speeds exceeding 150 MPH (241 KM/h). In addition, the musclecar comes with two new custom colors - “Gotta Have It Green” and Cobra Jet-exclusive “Flat Black”.

The 2014 Cobra Jet is powered by the same 5.0-liter TiVCT engine and Whipple 2.9-liter supercharger combo as last year’s iteration, it's limited to only 50 units, and costs $97,990 without optional paints and graphics.

(Prototype) Mustang Cobra Jet Highlights Day 3 Of Barrett-Jackson
Tom Jensen at 10:42 am Sept. 28, 2013

Quote:
Saturday’s third and final day of the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector-Car Event, which will be televised live from 3 – 11 p.m. on the National Geographic channel, two prized snakes will be among the stars of the show.

Lot 3004 is a prototype 2014 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, built to race in the NHRA Sportsmen ranks. Ford will build 50 of these Cobra Jets and this one has a 5-liter supercharged engine, complete roll cage and drag racing suspension, and custom Fiery Orange satin paint.

It will be auctioned off at approximately 8 p.m. ET, with all proceeds going to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Given the success charity cars have had at Barrett-Jackson so far, expect fierce bidding on this one.
Quote:
A very different but equally fascinating snake is Lot 750, a 2012 Shelby GT350 widebody convertible that was the last new car commissioned by the great Carroll Shelby prior to his death in 2012.

“We always hold out serial No. 1 for Carroll,” said Shelby American President John Luft. “We’ve made this car in true Carroll fashion: a lot of rubber on the ground, a lot of horsepower under the hood. He loved convertibles.”

Luft said this particular Shelby GT350, which is emissions-legal in all 50 states, produces an eye-popping 624 horsepower. “We tune them to run on 91 octane fuel,” said Luft. “The beauty of that is you can own an exotic Shelby, but it’s not exotic to maintain. You can pull into any gas station and fill it up with fuel.”

Next year, Ford Motor Co. will introduce an all-new Mustang, and there have been a lot of rumors about Mustang-based Shelbys going away entirely.

Luft said there will be a new Shelby based on the 2015 Mustang, although not in the first year.

There are rumors of a BIG Drag Racing name taking the place of Shelby.

Default Ford NHRA support

This can't be true, Ford building cars to support their Drag Racing effort and NHRA?

(purely sarcasm on my part)

LOL. Only Ford and Chebbie need the boost from blowers and turbos to stay ahead of a 2-door version of a Chrysler 300 while Dodge has been a bit sidetracked with rally racing Darts. BUT look for BIG changes come 2015. As far as race-only versions, Dodge could easily slap an F3 on their V10 Drag Pak car and leave everyone chasing their tails.

lol.. a 2.9L Whipple on 302 Cubes and an F3 ProCharger on 500 cubes are not even in the same ballpark of extreme.. One is a street car, the other is an Outlaw Pro Mod. That being said, power adders being equal, I still say the 302 outruns the Dodge V-10 in their respective applications.

You're saying the supercharged V10 would be less driveable than the 2.9? And are all the Cobra Jet cars only 2.9 cubes? A rude awakening is coming to the lovers of these cars.
