They have multiple sponsors, enough to race the whole season. Seems like somebody's not stepping up to the job. But to give them the benefit of the doubt I'll guess it's a low-budget issue.

The Jim Dunn team does a good job of attracting multiple sponsors and representing them well. I question as to whether the financial backing of these small sponsorships is adequate to be a top running car. Has Jim Dunn or his team ever won an NHRA National Event ?

This is a shoe string operation. He is a retired fireman that runs this deal with his son and sells the ride. Even if he had unlimited funds I don't think he would throw money at it like some do. Yes Jim has won a lot himself (at least 10 NHRA national events) & he has had competitive cars that he owned and had many drivers (Al Hoffman for one). He is in his mid eighty's & has been racing since before there was an NHRA. I know when I moved to California in 1961 he was a heavy hitter. The first car of his I ever saw was the Dunn - Merritt - Velasco Fuel Altered. He ran Top Fuel and then went to F/C. Jim had the only fairly successful "Rear Motor" Funny Car. He drove this thing with his nose about 1" away from the windshield & the blower belt a couple of inches behind his helmet. Go to NHRA 50 Greatest drivers and you will find Big Jim Dunn. He just loves racing & is really better than his resources allow him to be.

Roger, thank you for your reply. I went to the NHRA website and read about his history on the "50 Greatest Drivers". I had forgotten what an extensive and successful background he had. It was very interesting, and the enormity of his longevity in the sport is impressive. He has been racing for 67 years, and still out there!

Big Jim won the World Finals in Funny Car in the early 80's at OCIR - driving my favorite FC of all time The Fireman's Quickie.

His big show cars have also won with Frank Pedregon, Kenji-san and Tony Bartone behind the wheel...

By the way - Big Jim's competition number was 788... My NHRA competition number is 788... ;-)
