30 YEARS AGO TODAY, There was another band that made an entire album one big story. The Who, Pink Floyd, and Rush did it, now Queensryche when they released the rock opera Operation: Mindcrime and set them on the world stage when it arrived on May 3, 1988. The concept album about government corruption, corporate greed and dicey counter-culture revolutionaries, was unprecedented and remains relevant decades after its initial release.

Lead singer Geoff Tate: "We’re brought up as children to believe that the world is black and white. … And the older you get, you realize that’s a complete lie, and that there’s a loose code that we’re supposed to follow but most people don’t. So it’s kind of an eye opening experience when you realize that the way you were brought up isn’t the way that the world works.”

In the 2017 update of the 100 greatest metal albums of all time, Rolling Stone placed the LP at No. 67. Many fans believe Operation: Mindcrime remains Queensryche’s finest hour.
