Default Whit

Allow me to share a story about Whit. Back in the early 80's I was living abroad(Dubai, UAE) and was just getting into photography. At the time Whit was associated with SS/DI. Since I admired his work I sent a letter to him through SS/DI asking for advice on photography. The whole time I didn't expect an answer. Then one day there is this hand written two page letter from Whit with solid advice. Once I returned to the US I used his advice and shot some photos(head shots) around the pits at Englishtown and sent them off to the late great Leslie Lovett. Long story short I ended up getting hired as a division photographer thanks to some of Whit's advice. Additional help came from Richard Brady and Norman Blake. Whit took the time to help a guy along in photography, who he didn't know from a whole in the wall. Just a testimony to Whit's solid character.

Hank

Another great piece.

His views on a FC fire are correct:
Quote:
There is nothing worse than the smell, heat and sound of a funny car on fire, even if you are just watching, or shooting, it.
That smell was everyewhere when Force saw Elvis and I was shooting it

I really like the one with Beck and Fedderly.
To me warmng up the car always seems to set the tone for the day.

Gee whiz...Is it just me that these images and captions make me misty-eyed and give me the cold chills? Our beloved sport is brimming with raw human emotion in this supremely passionate pursuit of excellence, and Whit captures the pure essence of it all, superbly. Thanky you, Whit. You are a hero.
