There WILL be some sort of launch over the Snake River Canyon to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Evel Knievel's original stunt. There are currently 4 other teams contending for the position. We are the ONLY team interested in a historic re-creation. We have collected all of the parts to build two rockets and the first is under construction.

Fox Agrees to Broadcast Canyon Jumps in Live Competition
May 14, 2014 2:00 am • By BRIAN SMITH

Fox Broadcasting says it will air both Snake River Canyon jump attempts by Texas motorcycle daredevil “Big Ed” Beckley and Hollywood stuntman Eddie Braun.

The broadcast will be a live special and has the working title “Jump of The Century.”

Here's how Fox described the event in a Monday press release of its upcoming programming: “This fall, on the 40th anniversary of Evel Knievel’s high-stakes attempt to jump across Idaho’s Snake River Canyon, two very different personalities – professional stuntman Eddie Braun and daredevil Big Ed Beckley – hope to achieve what Knievel could not by crossing the gaping 2,300-foot-deep canyon.”

The canyon is actually 486 feet deep – the jumpers will span a distance between 1,700 feet and 2,800 feet.

Fox has decided to bill the show as a competition of sorts between the two groups, said Scott Truax, who is building Braun’s steam-powered rocket.

“Hollywood has a formula – everything is a dam* competition show these days,” he said. “…They loved Snake River, but unless it is a competition, nobody would watch it, or apparently so it goes. So we are a competition now.”

“It’s all about making sure Fox gets this jump and nobody else does,” Beckley said. “They didn’t want either one of us going down the street to anyone else, which is smart business. So, they hired us both.”

Beckley said he does not mind sharing the spotlight with another jump team and that there will be plenty of time devoted to each project.

Although Fox wrote that the jump will be broadcast live, Truax said it is yet to be determined whether the jumps will happen on the same day. Originally, the groups had scheduled their events a week apart. Truax and former business partner Scott Record were one of several teams competing against Beckley at a September Boise auction to lease state land on the north side of the canyon. Beckley won that auction with a $943,000 bid.

Immediately afterward the two, and others, expressed skepticism at Beckley’s idea. Beckley said last Tuesday he does not yet have a motorcycle to train on but will be ready to jump in 124 days. “I don’t like to use the word impossible,” Truax said of Beckley’s plan. Truax is the son of Bob Truax, who built Evel Knievel’s original rocket. “Anything is possible. Likely? Probable? That’s not for me to determine.”

Beckley said his team will be ready to build the rocket as soon as the check from Fox clears the bank.

“I’ve spent $1.5 million already,” he said. “I’m not going to dump another half a million dollars into a motorcycle until Fox sends us a check, and I know that’s coming quickly, thank God.”

Last week, the Jerome County Commission agreed to issue Beckley a conditional mass gathering permit for 10,000 spectators to watch his Sept. 7 event from the north-side landing site. The permit hinges on Beckley producing several documents, including plans for traffic control and fire suppression, and posting a $50,000 bond 30 days before his event. It also requires Beckley to submit a safety plan to the commission by July 7.

While at the Jerome meeting, he said he received a phone call from the “head” of Fox Broadcasting. The daredevil and company flew to Hollywood two days later to ink the deal.

Beckley has leased a two-acre parcel at Pole Line Road and Eastland Drive to jump from. Initial plans had the Texas daredevil jumping from the same mound of dirt Evel Knievel used during his famous, failed 1974 attempt. But the Twin Falls City Council scuttled Beckley's plans early in the year by voting down his ramp lease application.

Many council members said they didn't think Beckley's rough draft safety plan was enough to keep the city safe from a repeat of Knievel's debacle, which brought a wave of bikers and crime to town.

Beckley’s new launch site, which is under Twin Falls County jurisdiction, is closer to the city than Knievel's famous dirt ramp is. County officials have said that Beckley does not need a permit from them as long as he has fewer than 500 people at the site.

"And to any doubting Thomases out there: We WILL be jumping this year. Take it to the bank!"- Scott Truax

Does the Twin Falls City Council Regret Its Vote on Canyon Jump?
June 01, 2014 2:00 am • By BRIAN SMITH

In early January, the Twin Falls City Council seemingly had the winning hand in the poker game that became the Snake River Canyon jump.

Texas daredevil “Big Ed” Beckley had the chips the council wanted. So it bargained on what motorcyclist would pay for the right to jump from Evel Knievel’s dirt mound in a stunt guaranteed to put Twin Falls on the television sets across the nation.

The council’s requests were:

• A cash payment of $35,000 from the motorcyclist who already spent $1 million for a state-owned landing spot.

• About $51,000 in upgrades to the city’s canyon rim walking trail.

• Compensation for city staff time, law enforcement and criminal prosecution.

• In-kind improvements to the launch sites, including a paved road, parking lot and fence.

• A publicity agreement that Beckley broadcast Twin Falls in a flattering light.

• And a plan to keep the city safe from Beckley ushering in a repeat of Knievel’s fiasco of rampant “marauding motorcycle gangs, theft and rape,” which taxpayers picked up the tab for.

In a move that stunned many, the City Council folded and walked away from the table, saying that it would not consider a jump for at least a year because of safety concerns. Adding to their decision was the news that another jump organized by Scott Truax and Eddie Braun was set to occur the weekend before Beckley’s.

Beckley, undeterred, took his chips elsewhere to find other players. In four months, he secured all the needed intangibles and left the council holding the following cards:

• He would jump from a location closer to the city — a private parcel in Twin Falls County at Eastland Drive and Pole Line Road.

• No cash and no guarantee of compensation for Twin Falls law enforcement officers who may have to staff two jumps on the same day if Fox Broadcasting wants a live television special.

• An annoyed Beckley who said he would avoid the city during the broadcast of his jump.

• No plan and no control to keep safe residents, homeowners and businesses exposed to Beckley’s stunt in September.

So does the city council regret its decision?

Council members polled by the Times-News presented a mixed bag of opinions. Most said, however, that they were still concerned about the first week in September turning into what they always feared — a Knievel repeat.

Mayor Don Hall said he also is placing faith in Twin Falls County Sheriff Tom Carter to protect the city and negotiate with Beckley to keep the city’s police department whole. Councilman Shawn Barigar's regrets centered on the council’s process starting after the state auction for the north canyon landing site. That process, he said, unfairly put all of the weight on the council’s shoulders.

“I think the state’s process set this up to choose the jumper based upon the deepest pockets rather than who could actually pull off an event that everyone could be proud of,” he said. “Because that process went the way it did, it is almost as if it preselected the intended jumper without any vetting of event or safety planning experience.”

Lanting agreed, adding would have liked to work together with the state from the start. “Maybe we would have had a request for qualifications, whittled them down and then had the competitive bidding,” he said. “That would have been a more seamless process.”

Vice Mayor Suzanne Hawkins said Beckley and other jumpers did not give the council enough time for “the timeline they set.“ So the council reacted by trying to keep up, “and then it got to the point where we got ahead of them and we were driving the process and that’s not how it is supposed to work.“

“I’m sorry that everything got so convoluted and I just wish all the players would have been honest and forthright in hitting their dates so it all could have happened that way,” she said.

Hawkins said the dual jumps are “not a comfortable situation” but doesn’t regret her vote. She said her main hope now is for a jump that leaves “a positive reflection on our community and it’s not a negative for the next 40 years.”

"It appears the original ramp didn't match the drawings we had for it. Notice how much larger the slot down the center is."
