2nd Canyon Jump Postponed, Not Canceled, Truax Says
12 hours ago • BY BRIAN SMITH

At the edge of the Snake River Canyon stands a red, white and blue ramp tilted at 56 degrees. Its 88-foot steel legs stand in defiance to more than a year of rigmarole that has dogged Scott Truax and his dream to send a steam-powered rocket off of it, reaching 394 mph in less than five seconds.

“It ain’t over yet, but it’s close,” said Truax, whose father, Bob, built Evel Knievel’s X-2 Skycycle and ramp.

While Truax was referring to the work being done to smooth a joint in the ramp’s construction, his comments sum up the process that’s unfolded like a soap opera, keeping Twin Falls guessing. Truax and his team — including fellow engineer Craig Adams and Hollywood stuntman Eddie Braun — stand alone as the only team prepared to jump the canyon. It’s a stunt Evel Knievel dreamed up in 1974, but failed to successfully complete. Knievel nearly killed himself attempting the jump. But with 23 days until Sept. 7 — the jump date the team had hoped for — and no broadcast partner, the rocket’s launch has been delayed indefinitely, project attorney Paul Arrington said. The group decided late Wednesday to abandon the Sept. 7 date, which would have lined up within a day of the 40th anniversary of Knievel’s stunt, and withdraw its Jerome County mass gathering permit.

“Our biggest fear is that the community will see that we are pulling our permit and we are not setting a certain date to jump and will think from that this is just another failed project,” Arrington said. “We had that discussion on the phone last night and we had a date we wanted to say … but we didn’t want to pick the date and cancel again if a network comes on.”

The group plans to use Braun’s connections in Hollywood to create a buzz around the project in hopes of luring a new broadcaster. In late July, FOX Broadcasting backed out of a deal that would have put the Braun-Truax jump and Texas daredevil “Big Ed” Beckley’s rocket-powered motorcycle plans on television sets around the nation. After FOX scuttled their plans due to “timeline and budget concerns,” Beckley announced he would also walk away, despite being more than $1.6 million in the hole. When FOX backed out, Arrington said Truax and Braun returned to the drawing board but did not consider giving up — “It is not a matter if, it’s a matter of when.” In addition to the ramp, the group has three rockets built and will start testing them in a few weeks.

Braun has put between $1.5 million and $1.8 million of his savings into the project. Should a broadcaster not step in to help pick up that tab, Arrington said Braun will look to make his money back through a documentary on the project.

“If that means stepping back for a little bit, (Braun) doesn’t want to do it, but he’s willing because it is an expensive project,” Arrington said.

Beckley said FOX Broadcasting wanted him to scrap his plans to launch a rocket-powered motorcycle off a ramp and instead jump aboard a steam rocket like Truax. Beckley balked at the idea, posting on his website he’s not an “ego maniac” that will jump on any vessel demanded. “... We said, ‘(Not just) no, but, hell no!’ If we do any jump, it will be with a motorcycle based vehicle not simply a rocket on a rail. This was always supposed to be a jump over the Snake River Canyon not a rocket launch,” he said.

Beckley said he would not put any more money into the project until a broadcaster ponies up a “huge return” on what he’s invested. He wrote he was jumping “strictly for the business aspect.” On Thursday, Beckley said he was headed to a beach house on a three-day motorcycle and yachting get-away to “play and kill some fish.” He was skeptical of Braun and Truax’s chances of land a broadcast deal. “Right now, the media really doesn’t care about this thing,” he said. “Since we walked out and FOX dropped their deal, as you can tell, no one is announcing any media deals. “It is like it dropped off the world,” he said.

Not so, said Truax, who stood at the ramp’s base affirming he’d be ready to launch when the day came.

“It was meant to be,” he said.

I don't think any of the jumps will happen for a while now. Most likely next year in September. With no TV commitment as of this time, there would be no reason to try.

And by the way, I live 20 minutes from the jump sites so a short drive for me. I sure hope at least one attempt is done?

Maybe the manned jump, but not the unmanned test jump(s)!

I guess they will try tomorrow. I will be over in Twin Falls so I might check it out. Here are a few links to some tv stations that were there today and the stories they did.

From Paul L. Arrington FB:

"Took the scouts to see the Return to Snake River ramp and rocket. Thanks to Eddie Braun, Steven Golebiowski, Scott Truax and Jay Michaels for making the boys feel like celebrities. All the boys agree, those autographs are priceless."
