Default He Just Vanished-Shug Campbell

Many of the folks on here may not have ever heard of the tragedy that hit our sport and nearly killed it that March day, of 1969. The place was the outlaw Yellow River Drag Strip in Georgia, that Sunday there was a terrible loss of life when Huston Platts' "Dixie Twister" was up against Frank Oglesby in "Dyno Dons" Cougar S/XS. Platt got loose, out of the groove, a guy dropped a beer can on the track, went onto the track to pick it up and the Dixie Twister chutes caught the spectator, the car veered to the right, went thru the fence and hit a number of spectators.

12 fans perished and 50 were injured. That track was uninsured. Shug Campbell, the man in charge stopped the event, said another race will never happen at this track. State and local investigators swarmed into the track and Shug Campbell just vanished that Sunday, the track closed forever that day. I remember so well of watching the crash on the news.

Whatever happened to Shug Campbell, the DB Cooper of Drag Racing?

Dark time in our sport indeed.
