Default how is a race motor able to run on pump gas?

just curious... i was watching some of those amazing Hot Rod Drag Week 7-second race cars that they have to drive on the street between the tracks that they go to... and i watched Jeff Lutz in his twin-turbo big-block Shoebox pull into a gas station, and fill up with 87 octane...

How is he able to run a 7-second engine on anything but high octane race gas?? i'm taking a wild guess, that because it's a turbo motor, his engine is already a low-compression motor, but his turbos, which i'm sure are not small, probably raise the compression tremendously anyway...

Anyone have any ideas how he's able to make that engine run on pump gas, much less low octane pump gas???

Wink

retard the timing, scale back the boost, and

add octane booster after leaving the station!

Two fuel tanks (run by most), EFI, electronic boost and timing controllers. There was one guy (I forget his name) a few years back that would cut the blower belt off his Pro Charger for the drive and put a new one on at each track. Adjust timing and jets and BAM!

makes me want to mill my street heads and up the compression so i can run race gas, and still run pump gas on the street... i didn't think it was possible, even with octane booster and timing changes

If you are doing it with EFI then yes you can.

Reduced compression and timing backed up, and on a Turbo car, the Intercooler.

Modern sportbikes run 13+/1 comp stock and run on pump gas, never quite understood why car engines cant be designed like this.

They can, but the EPA won't let it happen. They claim that it is about Fresh Air. The solution to that is that these guys (law makers) would automatically get more fresh air if they removed their cranium from so far up their rectum.
