35 YEARS AGO TODAY... Reach the Beach, the Fixx's second album, soared to #8 on the Billboard chart and they got there on the power of three consecutive Top 40 hits, including the #4 smash "One Thing Leads to Another", a biting critique of flip-flopping career politicians.

Singer Cy Curnin: "In some ways, it was simple. Great guitar hook. One-chord song. Enigmatic words that ring as true today as they did then. Lies and politics don't mix, but we always have to suffer these fools. When will they learn that they are our servants, not our masters?"

25 YEARS AGO TODAY, Winger's "Pull" album released. Appropriate first tune on the album when two years prior, Nirvana's "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" was heard (and seen on MTV) for the first time, and like a light switch, the 80's hair band era was over.

That's the main reason why this 3rd album was their least successful of the three, but is considered their best.

30 YEARS AGO this past Monday, Cinderella avoided the sophomore slump with "Hard Cold Winter", topping at #10 on Billboard. Rolling Stone placed the album at #10 on its list of the 50 Greatest Hair Metal Albums of All Time, claiming the record “ranks with any blues-rock of the ‘80s.”

    https://youtu.be/Xbz5WUqWZfg

The magazine also putting it on a separate list of “50 Rock Albums Every Country Fan Should Own.” “All the hits are somehow about trying to get back home again, one of country's eternal themes, which might explain why you can still hear echoes of ‘Gypsy Road’ in songs by guys like Randy Montana and Toby Keith.”

    https://youtu.be/6j7E7pvLxmI

What gets ridiculed in one era can be praised in another, but only if it has staying power. Cinderella was playing the long game with Long Cold Winter; their songs still stand up. Even today.

30 YEARS AGO TODAY and hot on the heels of their first tour with Hagar and their first #1 album "5150", Van Halen quickly got back to work and released perhaps their most diverse collection of songs ever on their 2nd #1 album released today OU812!

The epic Led Zeppelin-esque "Cabo Wabo" is one of the best things this lineup ever recorded!

40 YEARS AGO TODAY when the Cars’ self-titled debut album was released in 1978, rock music fans weren’t really sure what to make of it.

    https://youtu.be/bnybirLa4xY

But in the end, it didn’t really matter much. Almost all nine songs packed enough big-time pop hooks to drive the album into the Top 20 and remain on the charts for an unbelievable 139 weeks!

From the opening "Good Times Roll" to "My Best Friend’s Girl", "Just What I Needed", "Bye Bye Love", and "You’re All I’ve Got Tonight", it was FM rock radio stations that made them stars, setting them up for their string of four Top 10 albums over the next five years.

25 YEARS AGO TODAY, the king of outlaw country music, Waylon Jennings, decided that his 41st album would need a change.

With just 3 more albums to be made, he made this one just for kids.

30 YEARS AGO TODAY WINGER RELEASES THEIR 1ST ALBUM and a lot of successful musicians look back on their careers and talk about being at the right place at the right time. Whether it was The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, U2 or Nirvana, any massively successful band owes at least a portion of its success to good timing.

If you could create an equation that measured musical quality and timing, Winger might have the biggest disparity of any band in history.

    https://youtu.be/rznWN8USBqQ

Winger is one of the most ridiculed bands of all time. Yet anyone who actually dives into the band's catalog will find a group with all the technical ability and song craft of any great rock band.

    https://youtu.be/etTw2R6tD-s

Kip Winger says he understands how he and his band came to be the butt of so many jokes and of so much abuse over the years. "Strike one: Me and my band arrived a few years too late, as the 80's was almost over and Nirvana was about to change everything. Strike two: My biggest musical influences were classical masters and not rock bands. Strike three: I had a background in ballet and theatre and not the bar, alcohol and drug scene that other rock bands required to be popular".

30 years, back in the day when bands actually sing and play instruments. Plus the music sounded just as good live as they did recorded!

RIP singer Jill Janus, center, passed away Tuesday and was reported today. She was 43.

Founder of heavy metal band Huntress, she also co-founded with the great guitarist Nita Strauss, the all girl band The Starbreakers, that covered all the 80's metal hits.

Almost 40 years ago, the 80's brought us a new kind of music: The power ballad. Every rock-n-roll band had to have one on every album produced during that decade.

Today in 1990, as the 80's music was winding down and Nirvana was on the horizon, Queensryche released the Empire album that contained the last power ballad and perhaps the best one ever made!

    https://youtu.be/Lnrcgzf8o3k

The tune made it to #9 on Billboard and the album reached to #7 and triple platinum, their biggest selling to date.

30 YEARS AGO YESTERDAY Metallica released arguably their greatest album "And Justice or All", containing perhaps their greatest tune.

"ONE", a story about a WWI soldier who is severely wounded  —  arms and legs blown off by a landmine, blind and unable to speak or move  —  begging God to take his life as he feels constant pain. His only hope is to devise a way to communicate with the hospital staff.

The album peaked at #6 and the song would be the bands first top 40 hit. The next year they played it on the Grammy's and the following year it would go on to win the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

Still got my ticket stub from Jan 15 1989. Queensryche opened up. Ticket was only $16 for these two great bands.

35 YEARS AGO TODAY Motley Crue's second album was released right after their appearance at the US Festival and springboarded them to one of the greatest 80's bands of all time.

You can tell this rare TV performance was from the 80's... NO TATTOOS!

    https://youtu.be/BApwjCFMUWk
Vince Neil: “Some people said we were satanic and angry. We always thought that was funny, but we were like, ‘Hey, if it gets us attention let’s go with that.’ We were so starved for stardom that we were willing to do whatever it took. But there was nothing satanic and angry at all. We were just having fun.”

Glad we got to see them back in the good ol' days rather than now. Like all the 80's bands trying a comeback... all fat, ugly, and sound awful.

AWESOME SHOW! Remember at the end when they played "Girls Girls Girls" and the tune starts with motorcycles, instead of them riding in on stage, it was recorded and a big blow up balloon of a motorcycle inflated, boy that was cheezy. Whitesnake opened up for them. Fortunately I wrote it on the back because I don't remember one second of that show.

30 years ago today, Dokken would release their 5th and final album "Beast from the East" that would chart on Billboard (#33) and would also be their last before their bitter breakup. It was all live except for only one studio tune/video "Walk Away" and even that was only accomplished due to lawyers. They never saw each other in the studio for that one tune and you barely saw them in the video together, it was that bad.

    https://youtu.be/ho5IF2yX5l8

They would reunite almost 10 years and 2 terrible albums later, but guitarist George Lynch and Don Dokken had had enough of each other and the band, as we know it, would be over.

Alone Again is such a great power ballad, and on this album, with Don Dokken singing and George Lynch playing... even better!

Dokken was one of the few Big Hair bands I ever liked. Not sure if they were considered Big Hair, but I loved Queensryche too.
