King, I don't think I could survive without Alice. Everytime I fly in to pick up the hauler, or everytime I leave a racetrack she has a nice large cooler full of food for me. I think you might be one of her favorite fans though...everytime we are at Vegas she asks me if you are there.:D
I forgot the team, but back a bit there was this gal called Prudence who backed up a car, she was sure built. One time at Pomona she gut into a minor scuffle with a security guard.
Nobody will ever top ole Jungle Pam, ever!

Jungle Pam is an awesome lady. There was a meet and greet, and car show at the Hooters in Bakersfield Ca about 3 or 4 years ago that we had to fire the Nitro Cowboy Nostalgia Funny Car up at, and Jungle Pam came over and hung out with us for a while. Comp Plus photographer Roger Richards had me use his camera to take a picture of Jungle Pam and him in front of the car. That was the first time that I had met Jungle Pam and I really enjoyed shooting the breeze with her.
At the Night Under Fire, they ran some old school gassers. Every team had a back up girl with go-go boots. :D The funny thing was explaining what they were doing and why to a newbie behind me. After they ran the funny cars were up and they just had a crew member back them up. The newbie wanted to know why the Nitro cars had guys backing them up.

Our ‘Characters’ or ‘Personalities’ of the early days of Drag Racing in my opinion (and in reality) got the job done. The fans knew what products they were representing yet the drivers were still that, the drivers. Fans patronized said stores and used said products. Goal achieved. As a bit of a ‘Character’ myself I have a hard time stifling my personality at all. I ‘gotta’ be me. As many of you have come to know, I was a professional skater for the ‘Ice Capades’ before I became a professional Drag Racer. So, being ‘understated’ may not be my strong suit. OK, it’s definitely not my strong suit.
HRM] Who first had the idea for you to back up the car?
JP] Jungle had an epiphany. Sex and speed sells! His number one at the time was Pete White, a savvy, patient soul. Pete put up with Jungle’s idea and taught me how to back up a Funny Car. I wasn’t a natural, so I took to standing behind the car for back-ups. A couple of months later, Pete moved on and I moved up front.
HRM] You did a little more than just back it up, right?
JP] I also filled the block with water and eight quarts of 70W, and packed ’chutes after each run.
HRM] Tell us something crazy that happened off-track.
JP] We took the Funny Car for a spin on a roundy-round dirt track in Binghamton, New York. Jungle had a wild hair up his ass and went to the track promoter/owner with his offer to idle around the track for a few dollars. The headers had a bit of a tough time with the track surface, but the owner, spectators, and Jungle were happy. That was a one-off. Contrary to many imaginations, Jungle did not do burnouts out in front of the house.
HRM] What do you think Jungle would think of contemporary racing?
JP] I suppose that would have depended which side of a sponsorship dollar he was on. I was taught early on to keep NHRA at arm’s length.
HRM] What is your relationship to racing today?
JP] I currently enjoy drag racing at the grassroots level. My husband, Bill Hodgson, helps tune a Nostalgia Funny Car, the Excalibur Corvette owned and driven by George Reidnauer. I am also proud to be involved with “Auto World Legends of the Quarter Mile Drag Race Set.”
